Infection

An infection is the invasion and multiplication of disease-causing microorganisms and pathogens in body tissues. It also includes a response reaction of tissues to the toxins produced by entered microorganisms.

Infections can be caused by a wide range of microorganisms. Among the harmful microorganisms are bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi. They are strangers to the human body and normally are not present in a body. Microorganisms typically existing in the body like ones living in the intestine, mouth, etc. are not considered infections. Infection can spread and enter the body in a variety of ways including inhaling with air, ingesting with food or water, skin contact with an infected person or things he touched before.

Once entered into the body, an infection can stay localized or spread bodywide through the blood or lymphatic vessels. An infection may cause no symptoms or cause some of the following: fever, chills, inflammation, swelling, body aches, digestive upset (nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea), rash, feeling tired, coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing, severe headache, and high fever. All symptoms are a consequence of the immune system’s efforts to get rid of the invading organisms. Moreover, some infections produce toxins or inflammatory substances, and they trigger negative responses from the body.

The symptoms, speed of spreading of infection in a body, and severity of the infection depend on the type of pathogen. Some infections are mild and slightly noticeable, while others are severe, can have dangerous consequences, and even pose a threat to life.

According to the type of entered infectious agents they cause viral infection or bacterial. The fight against infections is realized by the immune system. However, pathogens have a malicious ability to overwhelm the immune system and it loses the capability to effectively fight them off.

The disease-causing microorganisms vary by type, function, size, shape, genetic content, and acting in the body. Correspondingly the treatment also differs. The ways to treat different infections include medication therapy by antibiotics, antivirals, antihelminthics, antifungals, and antiprotozoal medications. Some pathogens are resistant to treatment.

ConceptDraw DIAGRAM and the innovative Medical Virology solution from the Health area of ConceptDraw Solution Park offers the whole collection of predesigned vector stencils, pictograms, icons, and symbols. All design elements - virus, virion structures, virus diagnostic equipment, treatment items, virus carriers, and many more are vector and easily resizable. They are helpful for representing the virology-related data and information in a visual way.

Easily narrate about ways to protect from a viral infection, prevent its transmission, treat diseases caused by viruses, and more health issues by designing your professional-looking infographics in ConceptDraw DIAGRAM charting and vector drawing software.
